Once Upon a Chance: Stumbling into the World of Words
Intro, or, How I Met My Inner Reader
We’ve all seen them — bookworms who seemingly can’t get enough of their books. People so hooked on their story that the world could go by, and they wouldn’t even notice. It was a concept I found hard to grasp. What’s so captivating about it?
Don’t get me wrong — I read, but it’s mostly for necessity, not recreation. I would easily pick up a technical or self-help book. My go-to will be a SQL, Tableau or Visual Analytics book, and I can get through one in a day, dog-earing pages like there’s no tomorrow. It’s not a chore for me; it’s something I genuinely enjoy.
But I couldn’t shake this little nagging question — why didn’t I have the same interest in leisure reading? Why don’t mysteries or thrillers send my pulse racing like a good old coding guide does? Probably more importantly, was something wrong with me? A part of me couldn’t help but feel a tinge of jealousy for those who loved to read many different books from many different genres.
